Following a U.S. West Coast Ports shutdown organized by the Occupy movement in Oakland, Calif. on Monday, December 12, the Port’s marine terminals are now open and fully operational.
Longshore workers, truckers and others returned to work on Tuesday, December 13, after local protests ceased at Terminals 4, 5 and 6 on Monday evening. The protest activities impacted hundreds of workers, postponed three ships being loaded with exports and caused delays for local businesses that use the Port.
Maritime activities support over 12,000 family wage jobs in the Portland metro area alone. The Port is also important to the agricultural and small business communities – 88 percent of Oregon exporters are small and medium sized businesses.
According to the American Association of Port Authorities, West Coast seaports generate more than $700 million a day in economic activity; some 260,000 hours of employment and more than $9 million in wages.
