It is the one and only day of the year when the Port of Portland’s Terminal 4 opens up for special access to go inside the fences of a working marine terminal that is normally closed to the public. Best of all, parking and admission is free.
On Saturday, August 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Seaport Celebration will showcase Portland’s thriving working harbor through a number of unique ways. Attendees can:
• See giant cargo ships on jet boat tours for $5 (space is limited)
• Explore huge machinery, equipment and displays
• Try welding and melting metal
• Play games and contests, bring home giveaways and prizes
• Dress up for the photo booth
• Enjoy live music by The Alphabeticians and Victor Johnson on the Fred Meyer Stage
• Taste a variety of delicious food available for purchase
New to the celebration this year is an art exhibition and a cooking competition. The Waterfront and Me art exhibition will feature work from local artists displayed inside 40-foot long shipping containers. All pieces will be available for sale and proceeds will benefit the Portland Community College Foundation’s Industrial Jobs Training Program.
The NW Natural Kid Creations Chef Competition will showcase three professional chefs with their kid partners to create some amazing dishes using products exported from Oregon. Chefs include: Jennifer Bryman, co-founder of The Heart’s Kitchen; Kelly Myers, Executive Chef at Xico Restaurant; and Marcel Lahsene, partner, Imperial and Portland Penny Diner.
The winning kid will receive a free Burgerville Seasonal Smoothie for a year and their recipe will be featured on the next Burgerville Kids Meal bag. Kids not involved with the competition are invited to join Chef Julie Merry of The Merry Kitchen to create snacks with Oregon exports.
Terminal 4 is located on the Willamette River in the St. Johns neighborhood at 11040 N. Lombard Street. The 262-acre, multi-use terminal is home to: a distribution center for Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles; liquid agricultural fertilizer imports for International Raw Materials; soda ash exports used in the manufacture of glass; and a flour mill.
