Portland Harbor Partnership kicks off its first ever On the Waterfront education series on Jan. 31 to explain and illustrate how the Willamette River plays a key role in the environment, economy, culture and recreational lives of Oregonians.
This event marks the first chapter in a series of presentations given by the Portland Harbor Partnership and co-hosted by the Oregon Historical Society. The Portland Harbor Partnership is a public-private partnership made up of members of the public and local businesses, along with Portland State University and Oregon State University to support community outreach endeavors. The group helps to raise awareness about the Superfund Site and empowers community members to get involved in the harbor mission. Lectures are open to the public and free to attend. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.
Two acclaimed Oregon historians and Portland State University professors, Carl Abbott, Professor of Urban Studies and William L. Lang, Professor of History, will provide some of their favorite stories and images of the Willamette River. After the lectures, particpants are invited to participate in discussions about the river and its future. Everyone will be invited to share their own “river stories” on video or in writing at the event.
